Research and Innovation

A cross-departmental human and equity-centered research approach powers what we do and makes us unique among higher education research institutions.

Calbright is not just a community college – it’s a research institution dedicated to building and testing practices that help working age adults achieve their higher education and career goals. Think of us as a lab school, charged with reimagining college to better support “stranded workers,” keeping track of impactful and promising practices, and sharing our findings with other institutions.

To do that, we use student and equity centered approaches to test new tools, practices and systems. We listen to and engage directly with students to develop prototypes and rapid-cycle test solutions to address the barriers they face, and measure outcomes – not just once, but routinely. We adapt and scale what works centering equitable outcomes and a seamless experience for our students.

Some of the practices we develop address systemic challenges, like how much college costs and what kinds of programs it offers. Others are focused on nuts-and-bolts procedures, like how often students have academic check-ins and how to design systems to support them throughout their student journey. Some involve getting students through the doors, some involve keeping them on track once they get here, and some involve supporting their job searches and connecting them with employers once they’ve gained in-demand, durable skills.

As a new kind of college, Calbright’s efforts, from big picture to small details, can be used by other institutions seeking to better support adult students.

Research Partnerships

UC Irvine and Ideas42

Calbright is partnering with UC Irvine and Ideas42 on a $4.1 million study to be conducted over 5 years using data and behavioral science to determine the most effective ways to engage and encourage adult learners to reach their career goals.

Community College Research Center

Calbright is one of nine institutions (and the online exclusive online college) to be part of a U.S. Department of Education funded Post-Secondary Teaching with Technology Collaborative to develop better ways of using technology to help students develop self-directed learning skills in online courses.

Lightcast

Calbright is working with Lightcast, a global leader in labor market analytics, to stay ahead of the curve on hiring and salary trends in California, developing programs that effectively prepare students to transition their careers into technology, and advance.

Tools Competition

Working with partners through the Tools Competition, Calbright finds, funds, and supports proposals that leverage new technology to improve equity and access to higher education for adult learners from traditionally underserved high-need demographics. Current projects include personalized AI providing course feedback and mapping student support.

Responsive Design Makes Calbright's Research Unique

There is comparatively little research on ways to support working adults and returning students in higher education. Calbright addresses this, engaging in research that provides solid, actionable, data to work with.

Our research methodology sets Calbright apart. We’re not just “innovative” – we’re “responsive.”

Our research is driven by a constant cycle of responsive listening, measurement, and iteration. Here's how we differ:

This cross-departmental research approach powers what we do and makes it unique among higher education research institutions.

We routinely gather data and insights from our students of focus, including potential students and are in regular contact with enrolled students in order to gain empathy for our student experience and advance outcomes.

We track student course progress, individually and in aggregate, in real time. Our research is grounded in continuous feedback and review of what our students need and how they are navigating their education.
